A

Accelerator

Ops & AI

A commission rate increase that applies once a rep passes a quota threshold, for example 1.5x the base rate above 100% attainment. Accelerators reward overperformance and should be modeled against plan cost before launch.

Account-based marketing (ABM)

Marketing

A go-to-market strategy that targets a defined list of high-value accounts with coordinated, personalized marketing and sales plays instead of generating leads broadly. Success is measured by account engagement, pipeline and win rate on the target list.

AI agent

Ops & AI

Software built on a large language model that can take multi-step actions toward a goal, such as researching an account, updating CRM fields or drafting outreach, within defined permissions. Production GTM agents need clean data, guardrails, review steps and evaluation sets.

Annual contract value (ACV)

Pipeline

The average annualized value of a customer contract, excluding one-time fees. ACV is the number most pipeline, capacity and CAC math is built on.

FormulaACV = total contract value excluding one-time fees / contract length in years

Annual recurring revenue (ARR)

Revenue

The annualized value of all active recurring subscription contracts at a point in time. ARR excludes one-time services and usage that is not contractually committed.

FormulaARR = sum of active recurring contract value, annualized (or MRR x 12)

Attribution

Marketing

The method of assigning credit for pipeline and revenue to the marketing and sales touches that influenced it. Attribution is only as good as the capture behind it: UTMs, form tracking and contact-to-deal associations.

Average deal size

Pipeline

The mean value of closed-won deals over a period. Track it by segment and source; a blended number hides the mix shifts that move forecasts.

FormulaAverage deal size = closed-won revenue / number of closed-won deals
B

Bi-directional sync

Data & Systems

An integration in which changes in either system update the other, as with the native HubSpot and Salesforce connector. It needs clear field ownership rules, or the two systems overwrite each other.

Bookings

Revenue

The value of contracts signed in a period, regardless of when revenue is recognized or cash is collected. Bookings lead revenue; revenue follows the accounting recognition schedule.

Bow tie funnel

Funnel

A funnel model that extends past closed-won into onboarding, adoption, expansion and renewal, so the shape looks like a bow tie. It treats post-sale stages as revenue stages, which matters most in recurring-revenue businesses.

Burn multiple

Revenue

A capital-efficiency metric that shows how much cash a company burns to add each dollar of net new ARR. Lower is better.

FormulaBurn multiple = net burn / net new ARR

Buy-and-build

Private Equity

A private equity strategy that acquires a platform company and then adds smaller add-on acquisitions. Each add-on brings its own CRM, data and GTM processes, which have to be consolidated to realize the value.

Buying committee

Funnel

The group of stakeholders who influence or approve a B2B purchase, typically including an economic buyer, champion, technical evaluators and procurement. Multi-threading means engaging several of them on each deal.

C

CAC payback period

Revenue

The number of months it takes for a new customer's gross-margin contribution to repay the cost of acquiring them.

FormulaCAC payback (months) = CAC / (new MRR per customer x gross margin %)

Carve-out

Private Equity

The separation of a business unit from its parent company, often in a PE transaction. GTM systems, data and domains must be split from the parent, usually under a transition services agreement with a hard deadline.

Churn rate

Revenue

The share of customers (logo churn) or recurring revenue (revenue churn) lost in a period. Revenue churn matters more for valuation; logo churn often surfaces problems first.

FormulaRevenue churn % = recurring revenue lost to cancellations in period / recurring revenue at start of period

Commercial due diligence

Private Equity

The pre-acquisition review of a target's market, customers and go-to-market engine. GTM diligence tests whether pipeline, conversion, retention and attribution numbers hold up when traced back to the CRM.

Cost per lead (CPL)

Marketing

Marketing spend divided by the number of leads generated. CPL is easy to game; pair it with cost per opportunity and lead-to-opportunity rate.

FormulaCPL = channel spend / leads generated from that channel

Cost per opportunity

Marketing

Marketing or channel spend divided by the qualified opportunities it produced. It is a better efficiency measure than CPL because it accounts for lead quality.

FormulaCost per opportunity = channel spend / qualified opportunities sourced

CPQ (configure, price, quote)

Data & Systems

Software that guides reps through product configuration, pricing rules, discounts and approvals to produce an accurate quote. Salesforce CPQ, HubSpot Quotes and DealHub are common options.

CRM (customer relationship management)

Data & Systems

The system of record for accounts, contacts, deals and customer activity, such as HubSpot or Salesforce. In a healthy GTM stack, the CRM is where definitions live and every other tool syncs to.

CRM migration

Data & Systems

Moving records, history, automation and integrations from one CRM or marketing automation platform to another, such as Salesforce to HubSpot or Pardot to HubSpot. The data move is the easy part; rebuilding logic and adoption is the work.

Customer acquisition cost (CAC)

Revenue

The fully loaded sales and marketing cost to acquire one new customer, including people, programs and tools. Blended CAC hides channel differences; calculate it by segment where you can.

FormulaCAC = total sales and marketing spend in period / new customers acquired in period

Customer health score

Revenue

A composite score that predicts retention or expansion risk from signals such as product usage, support tickets, engagement and payment history. It is useful only if CS acts on it.

Customer lifetime value (LTV)

Revenue

The gross-margin revenue a customer is expected to generate over the full relationship. It depends heavily on churn assumptions, so treat it as an estimate.

FormulaLTV = (average annual revenue per customer x gross margin %) / annual revenue churn rate
D

Data decay

Data & Systems

The rate at which CRM data goes out of date as people change jobs, companies change size and emails bounce. B2B contact data decays continuously, so enrichment has to be ongoing, not one-time.

Data enrichment

Data & Systems

Appending missing firmographic, technographic or contact data to CRM records from third-party sources. Good enrichment scores ICP fit first so credits are spent only on records worth working.

Data warehouse

Data & Systems

A central analytical database, such as Snowflake or BigQuery, that combines CRM, product, billing and marketing data for reporting. Reverse ETL pushes modeled data back into GTM tools.

Deal slippage

Pipeline

When an opportunity's close date moves out of the period it was forecast in. Repeated slippage on the same deal is one of the clearest forecast risk signals.

FormulaSlippage rate = deals pushed out of period / deals forecast to close in period

Deduplication

Data & Systems

Finding and merging duplicate accounts, contacts or leads using matching rules and a survivorship rule that decides which values win. Bulk merges without survivorship rules overwrite owners and sources.

Demand generation

Marketing

Marketing that creates awareness and buying intent in your market, as opposed to only capturing leads that already exist. It is measured in pipeline and revenue, not lead volume.

DMARC, SPF and DKIM

Marketing

The three email authentication standards. SPF lists who may send for your domain, DKIM cryptographically signs messages, and DMARC tells receivers what to do when checks fail; bulk senders to Gmail and Yahoo must have all three.

E

Email deliverability

Marketing

The share of sent emails that reach the inbox rather than spam or a bounce. It depends on authentication, sender reputation, list quality and complaint rates.

FormulaInbox placement rate = emails delivered to inbox / emails sent

Engagement score

Funnel

The behavioral half of lead scoring: points for actions like demo requests, pricing page visits and email clicks, usually with decay so old activity stops counting.

Exit criteria

Pipeline

The verifiable conditions a deal must meet to move from one sales stage to the next, such as a confirmed budget or a completed technical evaluation. They make stage probabilities meaningful.

Expansion revenue

Revenue

Additional recurring revenue from existing customers through upsell, cross-sell, seat growth or price increases. It is the main driver of net revenue retention above 100%.

F

Field mapping

Data & Systems

The rules that define how fields and picklist values in one system correspond to fields in another, used in integrations and migrations. Mismatched picklists are a top cause of sync errors.

First-touch attribution

Marketing

An attribution model that gives 100% of the credit to the first recorded interaction. It shows which channels create awareness but ignores everything that converted the deal.

Fit score

Funnel

The demographic and firmographic half of lead scoring: how closely a lead or account matches your ICP on industry, size, role and technology. Fit should gate outreach before engagement is counted.

Forecast accuracy

Pipeline

How close the forecast was to the actual result for a period. Track it by week of quarter to see when your forecast becomes reliable.

FormulaForecast accuracy = 1 - |actual - forecast| / actual

Forecast category

Pipeline

The rep's or manager's judgment of a deal's likelihood to close in the period, such as Pipeline, Best Case, Commit and Closed. Categories capture judgment; stages capture process.

G

Generative engine optimization (GEO)

Marketing

Structuring content so AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity can find, understand and cite it. It favors answer-first copy, clear definitions, static tables and schema markup.

Gross revenue retention (GRR)

Revenue

The share of starting recurring revenue kept after churn and downgrades, excluding expansion. GRR cannot exceed 100% and shows the health of the base.

FormulaGRR = (starting ARR - churned ARR - contraction ARR) / starting ARR

GTM engineering

Ops & AI

The discipline of designing, building and running the systems that create and convert revenue: CRM data models, enrichment, routing, automation, integrations and AI agents.

GTM pod

Ops & AI

A small cross-functional team, typically a consultant plus CRM, data and automation developers, that works in sprints on a company's revenue systems. It covers several skills without several full-time hires.

GTM tech stack

Data & Systems

The set of tools a revenue team uses: CRM, marketing automation, enrichment, sequencing, conversation intelligence, CPQ, billing, BI and AI tools. Value comes from how well they share data, not how many there are.

I

Ideal customer profile (ICP)

Funnel

A description of the companies most likely to buy, succeed and expand, defined by firmographics, technographics and situation. Good ICPs are built from closed-won and retention data, not opinion.

Intent data

Marketing

Signals that an account is researching a topic or solution, from first-party behavior (your site, product) or third-party sources (review sites, content networks). Intent is a prioritization input, not a lead.

K

KPI walkback

Ops & AI

Tracing a reported metric back through every calculation and system to its source event, to confirm the number means what leadership thinks it means.

L

Last-touch attribution

Marketing

An attribution model that gives 100% of the credit to the final interaction before conversion. It favors bottom-of-funnel channels like branded search and direct.

Lead scoring

Funnel

A model that ranks leads by likelihood to buy, usually combining a fit score and an engagement score against a threshold that triggers handoff to sales.

Lead-to-opportunity conversion rate

Funnel

The percentage of leads in a cohort that become qualified opportunities. Measure it by created-date cohort and source, not as a monthly snapshot.

FormulaLead-to-opp rate = opportunities created from cohort / leads in cohort

Lifecycle stage

Funnel

A field that records where a contact or company sits in the buying journey, such as Subscriber, Lead, MQL, SQL, Opportunity and Customer. Stages need written entry criteria and should only move forward automatically.

LTV:CAC ratio

Revenue

Customer lifetime value divided by acquisition cost; a common rule of thumb is 3:1 or better. A very high ratio can mean under-investment in growth.

FormulaLTV:CAC = LTV / CAC
M

Magic number

Revenue

A SaaS sales-efficiency metric comparing new recurring revenue to the sales and marketing spend that produced it. Above 0.75 is generally read as efficient.

FormulaMagic number = (current quarter revenue - prior quarter revenue) x 4 / prior quarter S&M spend

Marketing qualified lead (MQL)

Funnel

A lead that meets marketing's agreed threshold for fit and engagement and is ready for sales follow-up. An MQL definition nobody in sales agreed to is the most common funnel failure.

Marketing-sourced vs influenced pipeline

Marketing

Sourced pipeline is where marketing created the first qualifying touch; influenced pipeline is any opportunity marketing touched before close. Report both, and define them in writing.

Monthly recurring revenue (MRR)

Revenue

The normalized monthly value of all active recurring subscriptions. MRR movements are usually split into new, expansion, contraction and churned.

FormulaMRR = sum of active recurring revenue, normalized to one month

MQL vs SQL

Funnel

An MQL is qualified by marketing on fit and engagement; an SQL is qualified by sales after a conversation confirms need, authority or timing. The gap between them is measured by the MQL-to-SQL conversion rate.

FormulaMQL-to-SQL rate = SQLs from MQL cohort / MQLs in cohort

Multi-touch attribution (MTA)

Marketing

An attribution approach that splits credit across several touches in the buying journey using a rule (linear, U-shaped, W-shaped, time decay) or a data-driven model.

N

Net revenue retention (NRR)

Revenue

The percentage of starting recurring revenue retained after expansion, contraction and churn over a period, usually 12 months. Above 100% means the base grows without new customers.

FormulaNRR = (starting ARR + expansion - contraction - churn) / starting ARR
O

On-target earnings (OTE)

Ops & AI

A rep's total expected annual compensation at 100% of quota: base salary plus target variable pay. The base-to-variable split is usually 50/50 or 60/40 for closing roles.

FormulaOTE = base salary + target variable compensation

Opportunity

Pipeline

A qualified potential deal tracked in the CRM with an amount, close date, stage and owner. Its creation criteria determine what counts as pipeline.

P

Pipeline coverage ratio

Pipeline

Open pipeline for a period divided by the remaining quota or target. Typical targets range from 3x to 4x, depending on win rate.

FormulaPipeline coverage = open pipeline for period / remaining quota for period

Pipeline generation

Pipeline

The value of new qualified opportunities created in a period, by source. Pipegen targets are set by walking back from the bookings plan through win rate and cycle length.

FormulaRequired pipegen = bookings target / win rate

Pipeline velocity

Pipeline

How much revenue the pipeline produces per day, combining volume, win rate, deal size and cycle length in one number.

FormulaVelocity = (qualified opps x win rate x average deal size) / sales cycle length in days

Product-led growth (PLG)

Funnel

A go-to-market motion in which the product itself drives acquisition, activation and expansion through free trials or freemium tiers, with sales assisting larger accounts.

Product qualified lead (PQL)

Funnel

A user or account that has reached a usage milestone that predicts conversion, such as inviting teammates or hitting a feature threshold. PQLs replace or complement MQLs in PLG motions.

Q

Quota attainment

Ops & AI

Actual bookings divided by quota for a rep or team. Look at the distribution: healthy teams have a majority of ramped reps near or above plan, not a few heroes.

FormulaQuota attainment = closed-won bookings / quota

Quote-to-cash (Q2C)

Data & Systems

The end-to-end process from configuring a quote through contract, order, invoicing, payment and revenue recognition. It spans CRM, CPQ, billing and finance systems.

R

Ramp time

Ops & AI

The time a new rep takes to reach full productivity, usually measured as months to consistently hit full quota. It drives capacity planning and hiring timing.

Revenue operations (RevOps)

Ops & AI

The function that aligns marketing, sales and customer success around one operating model: shared definitions, systems, data, planning and reporting across the full revenue lifecycle.

Rule of 40

Revenue

A SaaS benchmark stating that revenue growth rate plus profit margin should be at least 40%. It balances growth against efficiency.

FormulaRule of 40 score = revenue growth % + EBITDA (or FCF) margin %
S

Sales capacity

Ops & AI

The bookings a sales team can deliver in a period given its ramped headcount, quotas and attainment. It sets how much pipeline the plan requires.

FormulaCapacity = sum of (ramped rep quota x expected attainment)

Sales cycle length

Pipeline

The average days from opportunity creation to closed-won. Segment it by deal size and source; a longer cycle means pipeline must be built earlier.

FormulaSales cycle = average (close date - opportunity created date) for closed-won deals

Sales enablement

Ops & AI

The training, content, tools and coaching that help reps sell effectively. Good enablement is tied to measurable behaviors in the CRM, not one-off training.

Sales operations

Ops & AI

The function that runs the sales organization's processes and tools: territories, quotas, compensation administration, deal desk and sales reporting.

Signal-based outbound

Marketing

Outbound prospecting triggered by buying signals such as a new executive hire, funding round, job posting or intent spike, instead of static lists.

Single source of truth

Data & Systems

One agreed system and definition for each key metric or record, so every report pulls the same answer. Usually the CRM for pipeline and the billing system for revenue.

Speed to lead

Funnel

The time from an inbound request to the first meaningful human response. Measure it as a median for demo and contact requests only, in business hours.

FormulaSpeed to lead = median (first touch time - form submission time)
T

Total addressable market (TAM)

Funnel

The total revenue opportunity if you won every account that fits your ICP. Bottom-up TAM counts real accounts in your data instead of using analyst totals.

FormulaBottom-up TAM = number of ICP-fit accounts x average ACV

Transition services agreement (TSA)

Private Equity

An agreement in which the seller keeps providing systems or services to a carved-out business for a fixed period after close. The TSA end date is the hard deadline for GTM system separation.

U

UTM parameters

Marketing

Tags added to URLs (source, medium, campaign, term, content) that tell analytics and the CRM where a visit came from. A naming convention is what makes them reportable.

V

Value creation plan

Private Equity

The post-acquisition plan a PE firm and management agree to grow the company's value, often with GTM levers such as pricing, pipeline, retention and efficiency in the first 100 days.

W

Waterfall enrichment

Data & Systems

Querying several data providers in sequence and stopping at the first valid result, which raises match rates and controls cost compared with a single vendor.

Weighted pipeline

Pipeline

The sum of each open opportunity's amount multiplied by its stage probability. It is only as good as the probabilities, which should come from your historical stage conversion.

FormulaWeighted pipeline = sum of (opportunity amount x stage probability)

Win rate

Pipeline

The share of opportunities that close-won out of all opportunities closed in a period. Decide whether early-stage losses count, and keep it consistent.

FormulaWin rate = closed-won opportunities / (closed-won + closed-lost opportunities)

W-shaped attribution

Marketing

A multi-touch model that gives most credit to three milestones, typically first touch, lead creation and opportunity creation, and spreads the rest across other touches.

FAQ

Common questions about RevOps terms

What is the difference between an MQL and an SQL?
An MQL (marketing qualified lead) meets marketing's agreed threshold for ICP fit and engagement. An SQL (sales qualified lead) has been qualified by sales in a real conversation that confirms need, authority or timing. The handoff between them, often tracked as a sales accepted lead, is where most funnel disputes start, so both definitions should be written down and signed off by sales and marketing.
What is a good net revenue retention (NRR)?
NRR above 100% means your existing customers grow revenue even before you add new logos. For B2B SaaS, roughly 100 to 110% is generally treated as solid and above 120% as strong, with enterprise-focused companies typically higher than SMB-focused ones. Read it alongside gross revenue retention, which shows how much of the base you keep before expansion.
What is pipeline coverage and how much do I need?
Pipeline coverage is open pipeline for a period divided by the quota still to close in that period. The common 3x rule assumes roughly a 33% win rate; the right ratio is about 1 divided by your actual win rate on qualified pipeline, plus a buffer for slippage.
What is a bow tie funnel?
A bow tie funnel continues the classic marketing and sales funnel past closed-won into onboarding, adoption, expansion and renewal. In recurring-revenue businesses most lifetime value is earned after the first sale, so the bow tie puts post-sale stages on the same dashboard as pipeline.
How is RevOps different from GTM engineering?
RevOps owns the operating model across marketing, sales and customer success: definitions, planning, forecasting and governance. GTM engineering is the technical build layer that turns those decisions into working systems such as routing, enrichment, automation, integrations and AI agents.
Can I use these definitions in my own team documentation?
Yes. Link back to the entry so your team can find the formula and the deeper guide. The definitions are written for B2B teams running HubSpot or Salesforce, so adjust thresholds to your own motion.
Next step

Definitions are step one. Getting your systems to agree is the work.

Most teams we meet have three versions of MQL and a pipeline number nobody trusts. We align the definitions, then build them into HubSpot or Salesforce.
